Almost all of the dogs that arrive at our sanctuary are the result of an initial telephone call from a concerned member of the public to one of our members and we thought you would be interested to know the procedure from that point on.
Every call is followed up, usually within an hour and if we find the dog is injured we will visit our vet for an assessment and treatment. Others that are at risk for example abandoned puppies or malnourished dogs are taken to a quarantine compound at the sanctuary where they are examined, wormed, treated for ticks and fleas, and given a good meal. Photographs are taken and an identification number given. Once we are satisfied that the dog is healthy we can commence with e-mails to our contacts in Germany who try to find homes for them.
Over 100 dogs have been sent to Germany since May of this year and are now living in safe, loving homes. Locally only 7 dogs have been adopted – no comment! Unfortunately it is still very difficult, due to the quarantine laws, to send animals to England, but we are currently exploring the possibilities for new contacts so that we will be able to expand our network all over Europe.
The way the procedure works is that we have a group of individuals and non-profit organisations, in different cities in Germany, that accommodate the dogs
In the six months that we have been operating we are very proud of what we have achieved. Since every dog that leaves Greece has to be accompanied by a traveller much more could have been done if we had more escorts. So we are appealing for people to offer support by escorting dogs. Since our net includes many different cities any possible flights can be useful.
The contact reimburses Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare for the cost of the flight, micro chip and passport. In order for the prospective owner to cover the cost of the flights, food and any medical costs that might be incurred, as happens in England, a token fee is requested. This also shows commitment to the dog from its new owner and guarantees to us that the dog is going to someone that dearly wants a pet. The future homes are vetted, They sign paperwork with strict terms and conditions and the animals are monitored and visited periodically. Noah’s Ark Animal Welfare is a non-profit making organisation and only seeks to recover the cost of sending an animal abroad, the only profit that is obtained is the satisfaction that our animals are protected and loved. Without the help and assistance of these individuals the sanctuary would be overrun with animals which we do not have the means or the finance to manage, and of course a loving home is what every animal is longing for.
We are open to any enquiries from anyone who is interested in helping with this programme.
